Beach Activities on Tenerife
What else can you find in an island that has almost 365 days of sunshine and mild temperatures, besides the museums and the "normal" places of interest? The beaches of course!
Tenerife has created some high quality, man made beaches, most of a fine black shingle or sand. These are mainly around the major tourist resorts. Most have good access, meet stringent European standards of cleanliness and most offer shower facilities, sun beds, shades and water-sports.
Here are some of the beaches you will find on your way around the island:
El Bullullo
La Orotava
To get to El Bullullo (La Orotava) from Puerto de la Cruz you can walk through the banana plantations and up and down the cliffs for about 45 minutes, or you can just drive, or take a taxi for about 5 Euros. No matter how you get there you will certainly remember your journey for years to come. A bar is located by the beach and there are some basic facilities. Nice clean beach with great waves.
|
El Médano
If windsurfing runs on your blood, then this is the place for you. Usually a windy beach, this place near the airport, can sometimes be uncomfortable for bathers, but is the perfect place for international windsurfing competitions. Part of this beach is used by naturists.

Lago Martiánez
Puerto de la Cruz
The public complex of Costa Martiánez, pride of Puerto de la Cruz, is one of the most admired examples of man-made coastal transformation. The creation of this exceptional masterpiece was adapted to the traditional Canary architecture and complemented with original sculptures and some horticultural elements. Its artificial lake which contains some 27.000 m3 of sea water, highlights the rest of the pools, four for adults and three for childrens' use, all of them showing original layout and beauty.

Lago Martiánez
Puerto de la Cruz
The public complex of Costa Martiánez, pride of Puerto de la Cruz, is one of the most admired examples of coastal transformation. A reputable technical team, headed by the well-known artist born in Lanzarote César Manrique, created this exceptional piece of work adapted to the traditional Canary architecture and complemendted it with original sculptures and some vegetable elements from the autochthonous flora. Its artificial pond, consisting of 27.000 m3 of sea water, highlights the rest of the pools, four for adults and three for children use, all of them show an original layout and beauty.

Los Cristianos
Los Cristianos
What used to be a fishing village has today become one of the biggest holiday areas, with some large beaches including a new man made beach. One of its beaches is 400 m long and 100m wide, which makes it one of the safest for bathers and especially for children.
|
Martiánez Beach
Puerto de la Cruz
This beach is located between the cliff that bears this name and the public complex Costa de Martiánez. Certain sections of this beach with black sand lays open to the powerful action of the sea, and is an appropriate scenery to the practice of surf and sea wall, beside Martiánez pond.

Playa de las Americas
Playa de las Americas
Playa de Las Americas is the most famous tourist area, and so this is where you will find plenty of small beaches, protected by long breakwaters to stop the made up sand banks being washed away. Being an area with a large number of tourists, always count on meeting a considerable crowd on the beaches. The great thing about this area is that all beaches are just a footstep away from each other. This is the place to practise all kinds of water sports and enjoy lovely scenery, much more attractive than any description.
|
Playa de las Teresitas
This is a very nice man made beach. It was enlarged in 1973 with the addition of golden yellow sand that was imported from the antique Spanish province of Sahara. Some 4 million sacks of sand were brought in. There are always some activities like beach volley, aerobics, etc. Facilities are quite good and there are some bars and simple restaurants. There are plenty of palm trees providing shade for the most sensitive on this wide beach, 1.5 km long. This is the most popular beach on the island and we understand why. It offers the best!
|
Playa Jardin
Puerto de la Cruz
And the dish of the day on Tenerife seems to be the man made beaches. So, here is another one! Divided in three parts by the rocks, we suggest that you walk to the last beach, best for swimming and walking. This is where you can also find a cascade, a sure winner among children. This beach has been awarded the European Blue Flag.
|
Playa Jardin
Puerto de la Cruz
Nearly one kilometre of the coast in Puerto de la Cruz has been recently regenerated, from the Castle of San Felipe to Punta Brava district. For this purpose, they have used 200.000 cubic metres of sand extracted form the surrounding sea beds. The beach shielded by a half submerged breakwater, consits of a 17.000 m2 landscape area.
|
Playa San Marcos
Another fishing village, 20 km west of Puerto de la Cruz, with a nice black sand beach fringed by rocks. Except for weekends, this one is usually calm and not overcrowded, plus you have small restaurants along the beach.
|
Roque Beach
Its sand is dark and more abundant during low tide periods; suitable for practising surf, may become dangerous due to frequent currents and sudden swells, despite the apparent good condition of the sea. There are some open-air cafés and fish restaurants by the beach.
|
Teresitas Beach
Santa Cruz
This beach was enlarged and conditioned in 1973, with the addition of golden sand from the antique Spanish province of Sahara. Nowadays it is protected by a breakwater. Some Canary palms and sea grapes have been planted in this wide beach, 1.5 kilometres (1 mile) long. It is located by the fishing precinct of San Andres, offering numerous fish and seafood restaurants, 7 kilometres North away form Santa Cruz.

Golfing on Tenerife
Amarilla Golf
The Tenerife Amarilla Golf and Country Club was inaugurated in 1989 and hosted the second Tenerife Open, which is part of the PGA European Tour in 1990. The designer, Donald Steel, used the spectacular natural backdrops of Mount Teide and the Atlantic Ocean to their very best advantage when designing Amarilla Bay golf course. From the first tee, the player discovers the spectacular ocean views. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes are surrounded by a broad variety of typical Canarian flora, enormous Cannas Indicas, the beautiful Washington Palms and the very exclusive Canarian Pines. The most impressive part of the round reaches its peak at the 5th hole where the sea becomes a fairway, making it necessary to cross it in order to reach the green. Golf Costa Adeje
Playa de las Americas
Golf Costa Adeje is situated 5 kilometres outside Playa de las Americas, just past Fańabe and Adeje. The course opened in 1998 with its challenging 18-hole course and a further 9 holes are under construction. It was designed by the internationally acclaimed, Pepe Gancedo who used the natural terrain to its best advantage. Built on a former banana plantation, the course starts inland then heads out towards the sea before turning inland again displaying fabulous views of La Gomera, Mount Teide and the deep blue Atlantic Ocean. Golf Costa Adeje is not for the faint hearted and a buggy is well recommended as the course has six par 5´s, six par 4´s and six par 3´s; with most par 3´s requiring a long iron to reach the green. Golf Del Sur
Another one of architect Pepe Gancedo's magnificent courses, Golf Del Sur has a thoroughly enjoyable layout, with wide fairways, lined with indigenous plant species, exotic palms and giant cacti set against the sparkling Atlantic. Ever since its 1987 inaugural event, a competition for professionals, the 27 greens and fairways of Golf del Sur have provided the backdrop for various top international tournaments. In 1989 José María Olazábal’s victory in the Open de Tenerife, a feat he repeated in 1992. The following year David Gilford won the event, as did Mark James in ’94. In 1995, Golf del Sur hosted the Shell Wonderful World of Golf tournament and which ended with a head-to-head battle between Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson. Golf del Sur has also been the setting for two golf driving distance records, both of which were set by Britain's Karl Woodward. First he set a new record of 398 yards and then, a few months later, he managed to break the legendary 400-yard barrier with a powerful stroke, which sent the ball flying 408 yards. Particularly difficult is the 3rd hole of the north course. To the right of the wide fairway is a water hazard; behind which lies an impressive ravine with an ochre-coloured rock face, while to the left is a gaping bunker of black sand. Another notable hole is the 2nd of the southern course, a par 3 of 193 metres whose green is surrounded by another immense bunker of black sand.
